Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur

One of the most technologically advanced countries in the Asia-Pacific region, Malaysia offers an exquisite blend of exotic nature and ancient culture. Moreover, this is one of the few Islamic countries in Southeast Asia.

Your tour will start in Kuala Lumpur, the nation’s fascinating capital and its cultural and business hub. The city’s iconic landmark are the Petronas Towers, one of the tallest buildings in the world, much celebrated by Hollywood producers. Many of us remember it as a filming location for Entrapment, starring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

One of the city’s major landmarks is Merdeka Square. Literally Independence Square, it is the place where on 31 August 1957 the Union Jack was lowered and the Malaysian flag was hoisted for the first time. The Sultan Abdul Samad building, which houses the offices of the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture of Malaysia, is just steps away. Designed in ingenious Indo-Saracenic style, the palace fits admirably into the square. The building is dominated by a 41m. tower capped by a copper-clad onion dome. The beating heart of any Islamic country is its main mosque. Kuala Lumpur’s Masjid Negara was built in 1965, soon after Malaysia gained independence from Great Britain. Its 70m. minaret rises high into the sky and can be seen from afar. Make sure to wear appropriate attire when visiting the mosque, and take off your shoes before you enter.
