Ayutthaya was the second Siamese capital after Sukhothai. Founded in 1350, the city is believed to have been one of the most magnificent in Southeast Asia. Between 1350 and 1767, it was the capital of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, so it’s no wonder that Thailand’s most majestic temples and most famous statues of Buddha can be found here. The city boasts rich and diverse architecture. At the peak if its glory and prosperity, Ayutthaya was the envy of the neighboring peoples, who repeatedly attacked and sacked it. Its sublime ruins still retain traces of its former grandeur.
Today, Ayutthaya abounds in attractions. Legend has it that the statues of Buddha, chedis and temples used to be lavishly decorated with precious stones and gold.
In 1767, the Burmese destroyed Ayutthaya. The remains of the towers and defensive walls, half-ruined stairs and gates, crumbling stone Buddha images are the only survivors.
Present-day Ayutthaya is a well-developed city in Central Thailand.
Since 1991, the ruins of the old city preserved in the Ayutthaya historical park has been under UNESCO protection as a World Heritage Site.
