Tourism Officials to Develop Northeast Thai Provinces

03 September 2018

As part of the Amazing Thailand Go Local campaign, the Kingdom’s tourism authorities have targeted four northeastern provinces - Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Yasothon, and Amnat Charoen – to become a tourism hub linked to the Greater Mekong Subregion. The project will focus on enhancing the quality of tourist sites, as well as products, services, and transport infrastructure. Hospitality personnel training programs will also be launched shortly.

In 2017, these four provinces welcomed 5.5 million visitors, up 10% over 2016. More than 96% were domestic tourists. Authorities say the unique nature, authentic festivals, and ancient traditions will appeal to foreign travelers just as well.

The regions’ major attractions include Pha Thaem National Park, and a large rock islet, commonly known as Sam Phan Bok, or the Grand Canyon of Thailand. The area is also renowned for being home to Hom Mali, or Thai jasmine rice, famous for its delicate fragrance and rich taste.
