Bangkok Wins MasterCard Accolades

16 January 2019

Bangkok has been named among the world’s top destinations in terms of the amount spent by visitors on dining and shopping in the annual MasterCard Global Destinations Cities Index: Indulgences.

Renowned not only for its historical landmarks but also for a mind-blowing variety of gourmet options, the Thai capital was ranked 3rd among the Top Global Cities for Dining.

In 2018, foreign visitors spent around THB108 billion (US$3.38 billion) on food and beverage in local restaurants which accounts for 20.6% of overall expenditure.

The ranking is led by Dubai with US$5.94 billion followed by Spain’s Palma de Mallorca with US$3.78 billion.

Phuket and Pattaya also made it into the top twenty – they took the 12th and 18th places accordingly.

Bangkok’s growing popularity as a shoppers’ paradise earned it the 6th spot the list of Top Global Cities for Shopping and generated THB120 billion (US$3.75 billion) in revenue. Thailand was the only country that has three cities featured in the ranking.
