Phuket Readies for a String of Festivities

24 January 2020

Thailand’s Phuket is preparing for the Chinese New Year Celebration. This year, the holiday falls on 25 January. The festivities will be held in temples and communities all around the island, to be followed by the traditional Old Phuket Town Festival, which will take place between 30 January and 2 February at Queen Sirikit Park, otherwise known as Dragon Park. Activities will start at 5:00 pm and continue until midnight.

The highlights include the Royal Thai Drum performance, a Chinese mask dance performance, a drum battle, a dragon show, a Chinese boxing vs Muay Thai demonstration, as well as a variety of concerts and shows. On 1 February, the Tourism Authority of Thailand will present the "Culture Show China” performance, and in the evening a ceremony to honour Guan Yin, the Chinese Goddess of Mercy, will be held at the dragon statue.

During the festival, there will be limited access to the historical part of Phuket Town.
