Maya Bay, Phi Phi island’s best-known area, will be closed from June through September, according to national park officials.
The area has been seriously damaged by the approximately 5,000 daily visitors. Officials want to give the marine ecosystem the opportunity to be restored.
Maya Bay became famous after The Beach, a film starring Leonardo di Caprio, was filmed there. Over the 18 years since the film was released, the spectacular hideaway cove has gained immense popularity.
When the beach reopens, the number of visitors will be limited to no more than 2,000 persons a day, and boats will not be permitted to land on the beach.
