The Tham Luang Caves in Chiang Rai, where a group of schoolboys and their football coach remained trapped for more than two weeks will be converted into a museum to showcase the rescue operation.
Chongklai Worapongsathorn, deputy director-general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, said the Kingdom will make the cave a tourist attraction. The final decision is however yet to be approved by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
On 23 June, a dozen youngsters and their soccer coach climbed down to the Tham Luang Caves. When rainwater flooded the cavern, the group became stranded and was not found until 2 July. The operation lasted eight days, during which time food and oxygen tanks were delivered to the boys by divers. During rescue, one of the divers, Saman Kunan, ran out of air while underwater and died. A monument to Saman will be erected in front of the entrance to the cave.
