Bangkok has been named among the world’s top destinations in terms of the amount spent by visitors on dining and shopping in the annual MasterCard Global Destinations Cities Index: Indulgences.
Renowned not only for its historical landmarks but also for a mind-blowing variety of gourmet options, the Thai capital was ranked 3rd among the Top Global Cities for Dining.
In 2018, foreign visitors spent around THB108 billion (US$3.38 billion) on food and beverage in local restaurants which accounts for 20.6% of overall expenditure.
The ranking is led by Dubai with US$5.94 billion followed by Spain’s Palma de Mallorca with US$3.78 billion.
Phuket and Pattaya also made it into the top twenty – they took the 12th and 18th places accordingly.
Bangkok’s growing popularity as a shoppers’ paradise earned it the 6th spot the list of Top Global Cities for Shopping and generated THB120 billion (US$3.75 billion) in revenue. Thailand was the only country that has three cities featured in the ranking.
