The Thai National Elephant Day, or Chang Thai Day, has been celebrated in the Kingdom since 1998. Annually observed on 13 March, it marks the date in 1963 when the white elephant, the sacred and royal symbol, was added to the old version of the Thai flag and declared the national animal.
Elephants in Thailand have always received great respect and appreciation. Deeply revered for their loyalty and strength, they played an important role in industry and agriculture and are now an essential part of the daily life.
Vibrant festivities are traditionally held countrywide with the most opulent celebration taking place around 80 km from Bangkok, which includes a traditional blessing ceremony, a special elephant show, and an elephant buffet. The holiday is also splendidly celebrated in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Surin.
