Second only to Phuket in terms of size, Koh Chang is the second largest island in Thailand. Measuring about 30 kilometers long and 18 kilometers wide, its shape resembles that of a lounging elephant, which is where it happens to get its name, as “chang” means “elephant” in Thai. Best suited to those looking for a relaxing beach vacation, Koh Chang is perfect for families and romantics alike!

Location
Koh Chang is located on the east coast of the Gulf of Siam. With about 80% of the territory covered in tropical forest, the island became part of the Mu Koh Chang National Park in 1982. The distance to the island from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport is about 320 km, which is about six hours by car or bus. A much less time-consuming option includes a flight into Trat province, from which travel to the pier and boat-ride together take just a half an hour. Additionally, ferries sail regularly to the island from the mainland at Laem Ngop, with travel time estimating 30 – 45 minutes.

Beach Vacation
Koh Chang’s main beaches are located on its west coast. Just south of the ferry line you’ll find Ao Klong Son, which caters to the crowd staying at Aiyapura Hotel. The island’s most popular option and nightlife hub is Haad Sai Khao, or White Sand Beach. It stretches for three kilometers, and sits just in front of the hotel of the same name. Divided into several embankments by the river estuary of a nearby waterfall is Ao Klong Prao. The distinguishing feature of Kai Bae Beach is an abundance of coral islands, making it a great option for those who like snorkeling and kayaking. Finally, the stony shores of Haad Thanam or Lonely Beach make a terrific refuge for backpackers who are looking for smaller hotels at lower prices. The wildlife found on this side of the island is a plus too.

Sights
The rainy season ensures that all of the waterways are full to bursting, creating a number of waterfalls not otherwise noticed the rest of the year. The biggest and most well-known is the split-level Klong Plu, just 500 meters from Klong Prao Beach. Reaching a depth of seven meters, its lower bowl is great for swimming. Another pretty fall located on the west is Kiri Pet, while the multi-level Than Mayom is located on the island’s east coast.
One important element of this island is its natural ecology. In the hopes of leaving less of a carbon footprint here, Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism has launched a pilot ecology project to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Entertainments
Having been a popular place to vacation for some time, the level and number of amenities available will ensure a good time is had by all. Everything you need for a great holiday – hotels, restaurants, cafés, shops, day spas, and more – are plentiful. Explore the local culture with the villagers in their local habitat, such as in Kong Kang Bay, where a traditional style of life is preserved. Or, head to the south of the island and the fishing village of Bang Bao where fresh seafood is always on the menu.

Active Leisure
Koh Chang is quickly turning into one of Thailand’s biggest centers for diving. Several spots dotting the south are ideal, boasting coral reefs ranging from depths of five to twenty-five meters. You can even complete a full PADI course across all levels from a certified PADI diving instructor. To ensure the best visibility, plan anytime from early October to late May. Other exciting options include snorkeling, fishing, boat cruises, and even the Tree Top Adventure Park where you can fly through the jungle amid breathtaking views.

Prices
Accommodation and activities found on Koh Chang are very reasonably-priced, making it a great option for those looking for quality at the right price.

Note!
In attempts to upgrade travellers’ overall experience, renovation and construction is prevalent on the island; something you might want to consider when booking.
